Hybernation - Object Studies - Metal
Stuart has been recording and sampling objects since the start of his Hybernation project in 1999, after becoming bored with familiar electronic sounds, plug-ins and presets. Early tracks, such as on Snow Cover and Interduvet Yarns (both released in 2007) used objects to create beats, that as a drummer, Stuart could not recreate with just 4 limbs. But as he delved further exploring the resonant tones of objects, these increasingly became melodic and textural components. These can first be heard on tracks from 'E2 & E8' (Cotton Goods) where Stuart combined them with location-based recordings, and on 'Thirty' (FBox Records), a recording of a live performance using 30 donated objects.
Object Studies takes this a step further by using just one object to create each track. Sounds produced by objects are usually a by-product of their usage, so by reducing them down to a resonant form, tiny characteristics can be discovered. Bowditch uses these to form a musical, harmonic response, turning the sound into something more purposeful and accessible. In this first collection, all of the sounds are made from metallic objects or components.
1. Bridge 20 (Lee Navigation)
Recordings made Sept 2009 using an Edirol R09 and contact microphones placed on metal structure of Bridge 20 on the canalised portion of the River Lee waterway system. Stuart rode his bicycle across at different speeds to create different tones within the reverberant foot plate of the bridge. Also captured were dropped stones and the footsteps of passers by. This track was made using many samples.
2. Intaglio Press (with Lee Sullivan)
Recordings made August 2011 of the intaglio press at CoExist studios, Southend-on-Sea, using an Edirol R09 and contact microphones. Sounds were 'played' by printmaker and artist Lee Sullivan, who uses the press in his creative processes. The track was developed over several months with Lee contributing to the composition and arrangement through dialogue with Stuart. This track was made using many samples.
The printing press was also used to create the covers for this release, with
3. Lucia's Earring (Lucia H Chung)
Recordings made February 2011 as part of a commission by mimosa|moize using an Apogee Duet and a Shure SM 58. A 30 minute piece was created using only the sounds of 9 'minute' donated objects (Lucia's earring being one) and performed at the artists' studio. The final segment of this performance was reworked into the track here. This track was made using two samples, one of 38 seconds and one of 8 seconds.
4. Ring Bolt (Landguard Fort)
Recordings made during Stuart's artist residency at Landguard Fort, Felixstowe, January – September 2011, using an Edirol R09. The ring bolts are part of the forts construction, situated on each bastion and used for attaching block and tackle to traverse large guns during mounting and dismounting. This track was made using two 1.5 second samples.
5. Cymbals (with Year 5)
Recordings made March 2010 during a film sound effects recording session with pupils at Our Lady of Lourdes School, Leigh-on-Sea (Creative Partnership project with David Valentine) using an Edirol R09. Stuart had a dedicated 'sound crew' to create the soundtrack and sound effects to the school production of The Iron Man which involved 60 Year 5 children. This track was made using many samples.
6. Harmonic (Ed Rome)
Recordings made August 2003 during a creative session with Ed Rome using a Sony Mini Disc recorder and a ECM-MS907 microphone. This track is made from one 13 second sample of a harmonic in G.
7. Wind over Shoebury Railing
Recordings made June 2010 on the (then) newly opened coastal path through M.O.D. Land using a Fostex FR2LE and a Sennheiser ME66 microphone. An easterly wind created a pan-pipe type sound on a hand railing situated atop the sea wall. This track was made using one 7 second sample.
All music written and composed by Stuart Bowditch 2009 – 2012
The album was released on 4th October 2013 on Rural Colours, the cover being a limited edition exclusive print created by made by Sullivan on the print press used to make the track 2.
