Hybernation
Production – Spending the first 20 years of his life in a semi rural environment, Stuart has a liking for the open air, spaces and places. His interest in sound and the natural rhythms and routines of everyday life have shaped the methodology of his work, which revolves around noises and sounds which he finds, records and processes. He loves to travel, near and far, and the recordings he makes become a document, a sound memory of his time spent in each place. He often works with individuals or groups to record new sets of sounds and over the years has built up a large archive of recordings which he draws upon to make songs, soundtracks to films and art installations. In this way of working he tries to make sense of the world he lives in and his place within it. Simultaneously, the creations and experiences of others end up intrinsically embedded in his work, creating a rich texture of layers, representing his life and those he as encountered along the way.
DJing – Stuart first played out in 2001 and continues to do so with more gigs every year. He likes to play in strange and diverse venues and was equally happy playing a 4 hour ambient set in Southend library as he was a 2 hour banging techno set at Ginglik, a club in the old toilets underneath Shepherds Bush Green. He had a residency for Telephasic in his home town of Southend for several years and shared a weekly radio show with DJ Wes Cliff on Rise FM for 2 years. In a more experimental field he has also recreated a live alternative soundtrack to several films, using just two turntables and a choice selection of vinyl.
As Hybernation, he recently has embarked on a new residency for Fluid Radio.
