AWSoM

Picture
AWSoM - The Ambient Weather Sound Machine (collaboration with Damien Robinson) uses foundsounds, triggered by the weather on recycled and found technologies to recreate environmental sound and feelscapes.

The first location we installed the project in was Two Tree Island, in the Thames Estuary, as part of the open day in May 2007. It was the first time that Damien had made her own wildlife recordings instead of having to rely, and buy, recordings from archives or museums. The second location was a working farm in the Essex country side, where we recorded the natural and mechanical sounds of every day life there. The work was installed at Sutton and Shopland Music Festival held on the farm a few weeks later. For the third installation, we were invited to participate in an artists residency by the Banff New Media Institute in Canada, as part of Interactive Screen 0.7. This new version was developed over 7 days with the sounds of the Rocky Mountains, including hill walkers, trains in tunnels, a fun run and of course the local wildlife.

The project was funded by Arts Council England in 2007. Special mentions go to Harwood for the PERL coding, Anthony and Derek at SoSlug for extra technical support.
